9 Comedy Movies

9 Comedy Movies (In No Particular Order):
- Wet Hot American Summer: I often tell people that this is my favorite movie of all time, and I am always, always up for watching it, especially with people who haven’t seen it before. I always see something new when I watch it, and Michael Showalter doing double duty as Alan Shemper is the funniest part of the whole movie.
- Clue: I remember asking my grandparents, who had HBO and I did not, to video tape an airing of Clue, which I had never heard of, because I thought it sounded neat and I loved the boardgame. Little did I know that it would become one of my favorite movies of all time. So many great one liners, an incredible ensemble cast, and, of course, this classic line by Madeline Kahn.
- Tommy Boy: This movie is the perfect combination of heart, slapstick and David Spade sarcasm. Chris Farley is affable and hilarious, as always. The gag reel, if you haven’t seen it, is great. Man, Chris’ laugh is so contagious.
- South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut: It is no secret that I love Trey Parker. His music is unbelievably catchy and well-written, and you have to be a super smart man to write something so stupid that’s also so good. Howard McGillin (who I once saw as the Phantom) sings the Les Miserables-esque “La Resistance,” a Les Mis parody before there were Les Mis parodies (and a damn good medley).
- Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls: I KNOW. I know what you’re thinking. Jim Carrey… HOW COULD I? But even I, as terrified as I am of him, cannot deny the hilarity of this sequel, which is roughly 3x better than the original. If only for this scene alone. You know which one it is.
- Mean Girls: I can’t not. The quintessential girls’ high school movie, back when Lohan still had it quasi-together. But she’s not the star of this movie, and if anyone is, it’s the dynamic duo of Janis Ian and Damien. Not to mention the incredible characters with on-the-nose one liners written by Tina Fey. And don’t forget, never forget, Glen Coco.
- Home Alone: It’s just like me to have a Christmas movie on this list, no? There’s just something so fulfilling about watching Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern get hit in the face repeatedly. Honorable mention to Home Alone 2.
- Happy Gilmore: I don’t know WHAT he’s been doing lately (coasting, Eddie Murphy style), but there’s a place in my heart for ’90s Adam Sandler. I think this golf spoof is a better movie than Billy Madison as a whole, which I also love, and it’s the only character in which Ben Stiller has ever made me laugh.
- The Big Lebowski: This was just on TV again the other night, and I propped my feet up and enjoyed it as thoroughly as I did the first time I saw it. Jeff Bridges, man. The plot is so convoluted and bizarre, and while it’s slightly dark, the comedy hits at just the right time. And a great soundtrack.
